Braunton

Reputedly, the largest village in England, Braunton on the North Devon coast, still retains many old fashioned but thriving shops and cafes of the kind that have disappeared from our High Streets today. With plenty of places to discover from the wilds of Braunton Burrows to the Victorian seaside resort of Ilfracombe just up the road, entertaining, fun-packed memorable holidays are pretty well assured. The village itself, just a few miles inland from the coast is quirky and friendly with many beautiful Braunton holiday cottages to provide you with a great base within easy reach of big sandy beaches and the bustling, historic towns of Barnstaple and Ilfracombe.

There are plenty of unique shops to purchase anything you might need for a day on the beach and a plethora of old fashioned to modern lovely pubs and restaurants to relax in after a long day out enjoying the sun. Braunton’s biggest accolade is clearly the surrounding beaches with at least four stunning beaches offering mind-blowing views out to sea (when not indulging in sandcastle building, beach cricket or surfing). The beaches are Saunton Sands, Croyde, Putsborough and Woolacombe.

The closest is Saunton Sands a couple of miles down the road. Saunton is quite outstanding. Its three miles of golden sand stretch to Crowe Point where the Taw and Torridge estuaries meet and flow together to the ocean. It is also sheltered by an enormous dune formation, perfect for exploring and for tiring the kids out! Hire a board from local surf boutiques in Braunton or at the beach and try your hand surfing there. Alternatively head to Croyde, one of England’s best surf spots just around the headland at Croyde, a slightly smaller cove-like beach backed by a village full of idyllic thatched cottages and palm trees. Croyde hosts the annual Gold Coast Surf and Music Festival every June and is a hive for sun, music and the most laid back atmosphere you’ll ever have to pleasure of experiencing. For a great beach holiday, treat yourself to a coastal self-catering holiday cottage in Braunton.
