Going up: If you’d prefer another form of travel, then head for the beautiful town of Matlock Bath at the foot of a steep valley and take a cable car up to the Heights of Abraham. Going down: You don’t have to be an expert pot-holer to go underground: just visit the inspiring Poole’s Cavern, often referred to as Derbyshire’s ‘hidden wonder’.

There’s plenty for children to do as well, even if joining the family for a walk or cycle ride through the stunning countryside is not enough. Gulliver’s Theme Park at Matlock Bath will entertain them (and the young at heart) for hours. Alternatively, treat them to a workout on the Go-Ape ropes course near Buxton.

Visitors in the latter part of June will be able to enjoy a very local tradition, that of well-dressing when villages in Derbyshire decorate ancient village wells.
