My Favourite Beaches in North Devon
The North Devon Coast is widely recognised as one of the most attractive coastlines in the UK. Spectacular sunsets, Atlantic storms and a history of shipwrecks and smuggling make the North Devon coast a special place. Excellent for lazy days in summer - and bracing walks along deserted shorelines in winter.
There are so many beaches within reach of North Devon’s finest holiday cottages that you could visit one for each day of a fortnight’s holiday and still not see them all. In North Devon, between Exmoor to the Cornish border, you will find vast, sandy bays and secret, rocky coves where you can surf, take the dog for a long, peaceful stroll or while away an afternoon building sandcastles in the sun. The North Devon coast lies within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with towering cliffs (the tallest in Europe), a unique location to spot seals and dolphins from the Southwest Coast Path. We have a variety of coastal cottages in North Devon, none of which are far from the ocean. Here are a few of our favourite beaches, which we highly recommend visiting during your break by the sea - together with some of our favourite holiday cottages nearby.
Best Secret Beaches in North Devon
Wild Pear
It’s a fairly steep hike down cliff steps to this dramatic cove just east of Combe Martin, but well worth the effort. Low tide is perfect for a refreshing swim in the AtlaIt’s, with calm waters and a gently sloping, sandy shore with some rocks inviting exploration revealed at low tide. Being accessed by steps means it is generally quiet, even in the height of the summer.
Where to stay: Mill Wheel in Combe Martin
_______________________________________________________________________
The Secret Beach: Rockham Bay
This secluded, rocky beach (sandy at low tide) lies on a rugged stretch of coast between Ilfracombe and Woolacombe. It still bears evidence of past shipwrecks if you look closely enough. To get to Rockham, park in the village of Mortehoe and follow the path to the coast. Alternatively, drive out to the caravan park and campsite, where you can pay to park the car leaving you only a shortish walk through green fields and wildflower-filled hedgerows down to the beach. It’s a delightfully peaceful spot as the lack of parking and facilities keeps crowds to a minimum, even in summer.
Where to stay: Old Maids Cottage in Lee Bay. Sleeps 6
_It’s __________________________________________________________________
Best Undiscovered Beach: Bucks Mills
If you want to avoid the crowds at Clovelly, then a couple of miles further east is the little one-time fishing village of Bucks Mills (think Clovelly without the crowds). Please park in the car park at the top of the village and enjoy the scenic walk down to the beach past its many thatched ex-fishermen’s cottages—Rocky at high tide with a sandy stretch appearing as the tide ebbs. The road through the village runs alongside a gushing stream which cascades onto the beach in times of heavy rain.
Where to stay: ****Old Chapel in Clovelly

Best Dog-Friendly Beaches in North Devon
Westward Ho!
If you fancy a longer walk, continue north into the wild dunes of Northam Burrows Country Park. Dogs and their owners love this stretch of golden sand, backed by a distinctive pebble ridge. And if you work up an appetite, you will find great places to eat in the village, right by the beach.
Where to stay: ****The Dairy, Bideford
The Dairy is a romantic cottage for couples with a private hot tub near Bideford. North Devon enjoys beautiful views and a sea breeze. Sleeps 2.

Best Surfing Beaches in North Devon
Croyde
Croyde is one of the UK’s premier surf spots, with excellent waves for surfers of all abilities. Beginners may want to book a lesson with one of the village’s reputable schools while at low tide hollow waves on a solid swell are a joy for experienced surfers. Don’t worry if surfing isn’t for you - there is plenty of space for bathing and paddling, while during the summer, there are many beach volleyball courts for those who want something more than beach cricket for sport.
Where to stay: Oyster Cove
_______________________________________________________________
Best Sand Dunes
Saunton Sands
Saunton is a vast beach with loads of space to catch a few waves, even in the middle of summer. The peeling right-handers at the bay’s northern end are particularly popular among longboarders, and there’s board hire right on the beach during the summer months if you need it. For after-surf refreshments at the swanky cafe in the car park takes some beating. For most visitors to Saunton, however, it’s not just the glorious beach that is the main attraction. But its dunes - stretching for three miles and inland of up to a mile, this is a fascinating SSSI nature reserve full of wildflowers in summer -in which it is easy to lose your bearings.
Where to stay: Braunton Farmhouse

Best Beaches in North Devon for Building Sandcastles and Everything Beachy
Woolacombe
The award-winning beach Woolacombe Sands stretches for three uninterrupted miles from the village of Woolacombe to Putsborough. Park on Marine Drive, wander through the dunes and pick a spot on the sand. It’s a good surfing beach with boards and wetsuits for hire in the village and oodles of space for beach cricket.
Where to stay:
Devon Beach Court - Woolacombe

The Last Big Sandy Beach Before Cornwall.
Northam Burrows
This wild expanse of sand wraps around the coast into the estuaries of the Taw and Torridge rivers. It’s a lovely spot for building sandcastles, and it’s well worth exploring the dunes, grassland and salt marshes behind the beach, too. Northam Burrows is also a good beach for surfing and bodyboarding. Take time to visit nearby Appledore, a cute fishing village.
Where to Stay: Beachside Waterfront Apartment in Westward Ho!
_______________________________________________________________________
Best Beaches with a Beach Cafe
Instow Beach.
Instow lies at the head of the Torridge Estuary just before it flows into the Atlantic. It has a sandy beach and a popular dog-walking area outside peak season. It’s also on the Tarka Trail and an excellent place to stop for ice cream if you’re cycling or walking by. The Beach Cafe is called The Glorious Oyster - a blue-painted shack at the entrance to the car park and cricket club at the top end of the beach. The food is locally sourced (including seafood), most of which is organic. Oh - and from Easter to the end of October, can we also throw in the fact that a Hockings ice cream van stands on the Promenade? Hockings is, quite simply, the best ice cream in the world. Ever. You’ll know why when you taste one. (Calorie spoiler!!!).
**Where to stay: Thatchers Cottage in Fremington near Barnstaple

The Locals’ Favourite Beach
Putsborough
We’ve put this last to try and keep it a secret. The beach at the far end of Woolacombe is nestling in Baggy Point’s lee. A shack overlooks the sands with glorious views down to Woolacombe and out into the Atlantic. Part souvenir shop - part beach cafe, is part surf hire. There’s a reason for that, and not just because it has a captive audience relaxing on the beach below! The sandy beach itself is a haven for swimming and bodyboarding - when there’s a swell. It’s popular because there is car parking in the field above the beach. However, there’s plenty of space to enjoy, even on a sunny weekend in summer. Not surprisingly, the locals head here on busy beach days.
**Where to Stay: Top Meadow in Georgham, there’s2
Top Meadow is a luxuriously presented dog-friendly holiday lodge in the North Devon countryside. It’s a delightfully scenic stroll down to Putsboroughf Beach, although if you are loaded with beach gear, it’s a. 5-minute drive. It’s also within easy reach of spectacular North Devon beaches, including Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton; this luxury eco-lodge is spacious and stylish, with a large covered deck and private hot tub. Enjoy fantastic rural views in a truly relaxing setting.

Our Top 10 Favourite Pubs in Cornwall
Our Top 10 Favourite Pubs in Cornwall
Whatever you have planned for your holiday in Cornwall, there's nothing quite like ending the day in a cosy pub, warming up by an open fire or watching fishermen land their catch in the harbour. There are too many atmospheric, old pubs in Cornwall to count, but we have picked 10 of our favourites, which we highly recommend visiting if you can. Where appropriate, we have also recommended an equally attractive Cornish holiday cottage within easy reach of a pub that takes your fancy.
Tinner's Arms, Zennor
13th-century inn with low ceilings, open fires and great food and drink. Take a stroll on the Southwest Coast Path before settling in for an evening at the Tinner's Arms. The menu includes Newlyn crab, Mount's Bay mackerel and 28-day-hung Cornish steak. An impressive whisky menu complements the Cornish ales and ciders on offer.
Tree Inn, Stratton
One of Cornwall's oldest pubs with outstanding food is near Bude holiday cottages. This beautifully presented 13th-century inn is set around a lovely courtyard. There's a bar area with a pool and darts and the Galleon restaurant, where the beams are made of wrecked ships, and delicious food is prepared with the best seasonal ingredients.
Blisland Inn, Blisland
A friendly pub overlooking a peaceful village green on Bodmin Moor. You will find this former CAMRA National Pub of the Year at the end of a narrow country lane in the tiny village of Blisland. Nothing beats enjoying a pint of the pub's own Buddha ale as the church bells chime and darkness falls on the surrounding woods and fields.
Watering Hole, Perranporth
Surfers' bar, which couldn't be closer to the ocean without falling into it. The Watering Hole sits on the sand in the laid-back resort of Perranporth. It's a modern pub by Cornish standards, with huge windows and a spacious, airy layout. There's also a heated terrace to watch the sunset as surfers ride their last wave of the day.
Port William, Trebarwith Strand
Clifftop pub for storm-watching on a wild stretch of the North Cornwall coast. The Port William overlooks a dramatic rock and sand beach in a steep valley, a stone's throw from holiday cottages in Tintagel. Pick an outside table on the cliff edge and watch the waves smashing against Gull Rock.
Fountain Inn, Mevagissey
A compact pub just off the square in a historic fishing village, the Fountain Inn is a low-ceilinged fishermen's favourite in the heart of Mevagissey. Holidays on the South Cornwall coast would be incomplete without a visit. The Fountain Inn is a tiny place packed with character and known for its excellent fish and chips.
The Front, Falmouth
The perfect spot to watch boats is the lively town of Falmouth, which is a charming town packed with independent shops and great places to eat and drink. The Front is undoubtedly one of its best-located bars, right on the quay, and was recently named CAMRA Kernow Pub of the Year for its wide selection of local ales.
Ship Inn, Porthleven
Fishermen's haunt with a terraced garden overlooking a harbour. Expect roaring fires, good music, local art and hearty meals at this warm and welcoming pub in the village of Porthleven. If you're unsure what to drink, go for a pint of Skinners' Porthleven, an ode to the surfing waves that break beyond the harbour walls.
Hole in the Wall, Bodmin
An eccentric pub which began life as a debtors' prison. The first thing you will see when you arrive at this old favourite in the market town of Bodmin is a stuffed lion in a cabinet outside the main entrance. Pull up a seat at the bar and admire the display of historical artefacts or catch some sun in the leafy garden.
The Old Albion Inn, Crantock
A 400-year-old Crantock Inn, complete with a Smugglers Hole, Discover original pasty ovens in its inglenook fireplaces, eclectic menus, fine real ales and friendly staff -all within a short walk of Crantock's magnificent beach - what's not to like about this characterful pub in this attractive seaside village on Cornwall's north coast!

Promote My Place Websites and ASL Certification
In response to an enquiry from My Favourite Holiday Cottages as to whether their sites would incorporate ASL certification, the company responded (very promptly) to confirm that this is one of their current priorities:
*Hi Rick,
*Thanks for your email.
As per our Christmas email, we are planning to offer SSL certificates (which will allow you to have a https domain) to all customers as soon as possible. After extensive investigation and testing we have found a solution which should allow us to offer them for free, but unfortunately, we need to upgrade our servers in order to do this, so we are planning and testing for that as a priority.
At the moment, the information being sent via the PromoteMyPlace enquiry form is not submitted via SSL, as it wasn't a requirement in the past, and in fact, many websites on the internet still do not use SSL unless they're accepting very sensitive information such as credit cards.
But the new data privacy laws are changing this, so as mentioned above, it is something we're addressing as a matter of urgency.
Due to the complexity of the task, I'm afraid that I can't give a definitive completion date, but be assured it is a priority for us and we will update all customers as soon as we can.
But do come back to us if you have any further queries relating to this. Kind Regards,
Kayleigh Customer Support Administrator*

Save Money by Avoiding Booking Fees
Did you know that when booking a holiday cottage through sites such as HomeAway, Owners Direct and TripAdvisor, you will be paying the website (not the cottage owner) a booking fee in the region of 10% over and above the advertised rental price? The good news is that this includes some holiday insurance if you have to cancel your holiday (terms apply). The bad news is that you could book your cottage for much less when booking directly with the owner or agent.
Here at My Favourite Holiday Cottages, you may rest assured that we won’t charge you a single penny in terms of booking fees – whether you book a cottage online via an advert, by making an enquiry, or by going directly to its website. It’s the owner’s advertised price and not a penny more!
