With its harbour, sandy beach and pretty historic centre, it has been a popular destination among holidaymakers for centuries. A stroll away from holiday cottages in Minehead, the town’s vast beach is a glorious place to spend an afternoon swimming, sunbathing, or building sandcastles. The town marks the start of one of the world’s most famous long-distance walking routes, the South West Coast Path. The stretch to Porlock and Porlock Weir is nine miles with wooded combes, towering clifftops and hidden coves to discover. Another great day to enjoy while staying in a holiday cottage in Minehead is a ride on the West Somerset Railway, which runs through unspoiled hills and fields for 20 miles from the town to Bishops Lydeard.

Family fun can be found at Butlins’ Splash Water World and Funfair, with go-karts, bumper boats, adventure golf and plenty more. Every Friday, there is a farmers’ market where you can buy produce from Exmoor and the Quantock Hills. In the historic town centre, you will notice fine Victorian architecture and a variety of cosy pubs, tearooms and restaurants, many of which serve delicious food prepared with the fresh ingredients the region is known for.

Within a healthy walking distance along a sandy beach (or one stop on the West Somerset Railway) is the historic medieval village of Dunster with its ancient yarn market, National Trust-managed castle and some of Somerset’s finest tea rooms i
