Castles, churches, medieval streets, parkland and river walks are all a stone's throw from Shrewsbury holiday cottages. This ancient market town lies on the banks of the River Severn in Shropshire and is well known as the birthplace of Charles Darwin. It is also famous for its flower displays, which fill the town with colour every spring. Shrewsbury's beautifully preserved medieval centre is home to more than 600 listed buildings, including fine examples of timber-framed architecture from the 15th and 16th centuries. Walk into the town centre from your holiday cottage in Shrewsbury and explore the tangle of narrow lanes and squares. You will notice narrow passages known as 'shuts', which pass through buildings from one street to another. Around every corner, you will find unique independent shops and restaurants. Shrewsbury is almost entirely encircled by the River Severn, with nine historical bridges. From the hillside overlooking Shrewsbury, you will see several church spires rising from the town centre, including Roman Catholic Shrewsbury Cathedral and St Alkmund's, which, according to legend, was damaged by the Devil in 1553 and climbed four times by a drunken steeplejack in 1621.

There's a huge range of festivals to enjoy on self-catering holidays in Shrewsbury, with events celebrating everything from cartoons and comedy to cycling and dragon boat racing. Shrewsbury's annual flower festival is said to be the world's longest-running event of its kind. It has been held annually for over 125 years and runs for two days in August, with exhibitions, gardens and a brilliant fireworks display. The Shrewsbury Folk Festival also takes place in August at various venues in the town, and the Shropshire County Show is held in May on Coton Hill.
