Quantock Country: Sleepy Villages, Beach Woods, Bluebells, Gorse, Bracken...and a Steam Railway

Oak woods, parkland, heath and fields are all on the doorstep of Quantock holiday cottages. This glorious range of hills lies west of Bridgewater in the county of Somerset. The Quantocks run for roughly 15 miles, from the Vale of Taunton Deane in the south to Kilve and West Quantoxhead on the Bristol Channel coast. The hills are England's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, designated in 1956, and are a paradise for walking, wildlife-watching or enjoying peace and solitude in an unspoiled corner of the Southwest. Dramatic rocky bays and towering clifftops dominate the coast, which is popular among fossil hunters, while inland, the hills are blanketed in heather, gorse and bracken. Hike to the hilltops on a clear day, and you can see all the way to Exmoor to the west, Wales to the north and Glastonbury Tor and the Mendips to the east.

Explore the countryside from your Quantocks holiday cottage, and you will discover Iron Age hill forts and Bronze Age round barrows. Countless footpaths meander through the hills, including the renowned Coleridge Way, named after local poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, passing through the villages of Monksilver, Roadwater and Luxborough on its way to Exmoor. Look out for red deer as you explore the ancient oak pollards at Willoughby Cleeve or visit the Highland Cattle near Fyne Court, at the southern end of the Quantocks.

In the sleepy villages dotting the hills, you will find outstanding restaurants where you can enjoy delicious food prepared with fresh ingredients from the area's farms. Clavelshay Barn in North Petherton and Combe House in Holford are excellent options for an evening meal, while the Blue Ball Inn in Triscombe and the Hood Arms are lovely pubs, serving good food and Somerset ciders.
