Harber Scar, Settle
The 300-year-old stone-built terraced cottage has been through a thoroughly modern update, ideal for small families. Being in the heart of the Dales, stretches of glorious Yorkshire countryside are at the doorstep of the Harber Scar.
Through the washed stone walls, guests are greeted to a large, welcoming living space, with original ceiling beams intact, while benefiting from a contemporary makeover. The room features a centrepiece fireplace with a functioning wood burner, soft leather sofas, a flat-screen TV, real wooden furniture and ample natural light for a cosy, inviting spot that exudes warmth.
The ground floor also features a modern fitted kitchen with halogen hobs, a dining table, and quirky carved shelving. Leading outdoors is a large garden with a barbeque and outdoor furniture for some alfresco dining that overlooks a scenic brook and the Three Peaks backdrop.
Upstairs are three generously sized bedrooms and a family bathroom: the master bedroom has a king-sized bed, the second boasts twin beds, and the third is a single room.

New and lovely. A great place to stay, very welcoming on arrival. Gold Lion pub down the road - excellent and welcome a dog! Great.
It was a wonderful peaceful Christmas. The cottage was lovely and the owners were very nice too. We would definatly recommend this cottage to others.
The cottage was warm and comfortable. The owner was very accommodating and left milk, tea, coffee and gorgeous biscuits. Also a lovely fire in the woodburner when we arrived. Perfect in cold January. In an excellent position with good walking from the door. A good bus and train service. The pub was 1 minute walk away. Excellent garden.
An ideal property for visiting the Yorkshire Dales. It was a very comfortable cottage with everything we needed for a lovely holiday.
The accommodation was excellent, sited close to wonderful walking ways.
Excellent location and a pretty cottage. Nice touch with the milk and muffins left for us. Log burner was lovely and made it homely. So much to do in the area. Cottage was clean and homely and surprisingly roomy.
I would have no hesitation in coming back here for another holiday.
Great cottage, by far the best sofas and chairs we have had when renting a self catering property which was very welcome. Also appreciated was the provision of proper cooking utilities and utensils. This is something that is rarely provided and was appreciated greatly! The log fire was great!
It was homely, comfy, lovely and warm; log burner was brill', as was secure front garden for our dog. Want to move in!
Harber Scar cottage was well furnished & homely. Location is very good next to The Crown Hotel. The log burner was made for cosy evenings & we were impressed with the amount of kitchen equipment.
Great location for the 3 peaks and The Crown pub which sells great food.
The cottage is a very welcoming place to stay, with a lovely garden to sit in and admire the views over the hills. Everything you need is here for a comfortable relaxing stay. The situation is perfect for walking, caving, cycling, and for general sightseeing in this part of Yorkshire.
Lovely cosy cottage. Loved the log burning stove in lounge - very welcoming after a long walk in the rain on the fells. Local pub is a couple of steps from the front door and serves good, reasonably priced meals.
A beautiful cottage in a very picturesque part of the Yorkshire Dales. Lots of walks easily accessed.Everyone in the village was very friendly and helpful. Will definitely be going back in the near future.
The cottage was lovely, a very comfortable home from home. Weather was brilliant which helps when walking every day. We will certainly be staying at Harber Scar in the future.
Cottage was warm, comfortable and cosy, while having plenty of space at the same time. Everything you needed was provided. The area was very peaceful and had a nice relaxing atmosphere, wish we could have stayed for much longer.
Harber Scar is an excellent base for touring the dales. It was cosy and warm, the addition of a wood burning stove added to the character of the cottage. The standard of cleanliness was good and the kitchen really well equipped.
We loved the location of the cottage. It was scrupulously clean, well furnished and well equipped. We arrived to thick snow, and as the roads were excellently gritted we had no problem arriving and it made the countryside stunning - the spent the first day in and around the village just taking in the beauty of the area under a blanket of snow.
Very homely traditional cottage with a wood burner in lounge, making it warm and cosy in the snow. Plenty of logs and coal were supplied for our long weekend stay. The enclosed garden was great for our grandson and dog to play. Conveniently located next to the village pub and for exploring the surrounding countryside.
The cottage was cosy - loved the wood stove and that everything in the cottage was dog friendly.
It was a lovely cottage, very comfortable, warm, homely and in a gorgeous setting. The kitchen was very well equipped and the whole cottage was very clean. The location of the cottage is fantastic, the stream that runs around the boundary of the garden was beautiful and the Dales are utterly beautiful. Would definitely book Harber Scar again. The homemade muffins were divine and the bottle of milk in the fridge was very much appreciated on our arrival! A lovely stay.
A fantastic location and a perfect set up in the cottage for me and my family with all modern conveniences in a character cottage. The garden was lovely and it was a great situation to explore the area. We will book again!
A homely cottage with a lovely atmosphere and walks available from the front door. We felt at home from the minute we walked through the door. After hard days walking, the pub 19.5 steps away was very welcoming, and then into a very comfortable bed for a great nights sleep. Highly recommended.
This was a wonderfully comfortable cottage - warm, with a lovely garden and incredibly close to the local pub. We were using the cottage as our base to walk the Yorkshire 3 Peaks and it couldn't have been in a better location. Lovely that they allowed dogs too.
Harber Scar was a home from home and very well equipped. The cottage was also very dog friendly which was most important to me.
Beautiful little cottage! We would definitely stay here again.
Beautiful cottage in a brilliant location; perfect for a walking holiday.
Cosy and Welcoming
Lovely cosy cottage . The owner was very welcoming and helpful . We loved the location and would love to go back and stay in Harbor Scar again .
Lovely cozy cottage
Really lovely cottage in a very nice village. Situated opposite a pub and near to the train station for easy access. Ideal for people that like walking as it is right on the Penine Way. Perfect base for doing the Yorkshire 3 Peaks too. Cottage was very good value for money and we hope to return in the future.
Idyll cottage in the Dales.
Very warm and cosy cottage, everything we could wish for.Well located - just 10 steps from door to door of pub! Pet friendly safe enclosed garden.
Home from home
Wonderful cottage which was very clean and comfortable. Pleasant little surprise on arrival - chocolate in any form is always a winner. Harber Scar is situated in an ideal location for exploring the Dales, walking holidays or, if you are really enthusiastic, climbing the Three Peaks. Cottage is 5 minute walk from the Settle - Carlisle railway which is well worth the trip even on a diesel train. The views are magnificent. Pub opposite the cottage is friendly and serves good food and ale. Although it is dog friendly they do not allow dogs anywhere inside the pub when they are serving food. Pub at other end of village is dog friendly all day except in restaurant.
Comfortable, warm and homely holiday cottage.
The cottage is very comfortable, warm and all the conveniences you need. Dog friendly. Home from home. In a lovely position 1 minute from an excellent pub with friendly, dog friendly people. The cottage owners are very accommodating and welcoming of guests. The tea, coffee, sugar and milk and homemade biscuits was most welcome. We arrived by train, the cottage 10 minutes walk from train and the bus service is excellent. Lots of good walking from the door.
Lovely cottage, great spot
Fantastic cottage in a lovely spot near the river. Well equipped kitchen and great for walks right from the doorstep.
very relaxing welcoming and cosy home from home cottage.
Brilliant base for a relaxing break. Home baked muffins and milk from the owners was a welcome treat and handy because we forgot to buy milk!. Neighbours friendly and welcoming. Only 15 steps to the pub! Logs and coal aplenty and cottage extremely cosy when fire going. We would definitely recommend this cottage and will be back again im sure. Thanks for a wonderful weekend
Beautiful homely family cottage
First class. We stayed here on a last minute break for 3 days. We had some lovely walks here. Cottage is situated just a; few minutes walk from the railway station and directly opposite the local pub which serves excellent food. Enjoyed the log burner fire on cooler nights - logs and coal were supplied for us - also had homemade raspberry muffins left for us on arrival - bliss. Ideal base for walking the dales. Would love to stay here again.
Great place, super facilities
This is a wonderful three bedroom cottage with a large lounge, garden and great kitchen. The lounge has a wood burning stove in it. The cottage is exactly 12 steps from a great pub and has amble parking. The owner had milk in the fridge, cookies and had laid a fire in the stove. The beds are very comfortable and the bathroom and shower are great. The garden is lovely and at the end is a nice creek. There are facilities for BBQ and lawn chairs.
The only fault I have is there is no Wifi and the mobile service is limited in the village. The pub also does not have Wifi which I find very strange in this day and age. I really do think the owner must install Wifi as it is so necessary in this day and age to plan you outings.
The village is nice with two pubs both with excellent food. There is a super old church and the location is central to exploring the entire area.
Chilled to Perfection
Had a lovely 3 days here , very homely spacious cottage in a superb location. The milk and cookies mentioned in other reviews and made up log fire were all waiting for us on arrival and are a lovely touch. We managed the full 3 days of walking with a rewarding drink in the pub opposite , I made it 19.5 steps from front door to front door ,There was absolutely no noise from the pub and couple running it are very friendly. The garden is great as well and in warm weather your own private beer garden
Lovely well equipped dog friendly cottage!
Just arrived home after spending three nights at this lovely cottage in Horten in Ribblesdale. I would highly recommend it especially to those taking their dogs to the dales. Everything you could want in a home from home! We loved it!
Miss
As one of Kayla's party of 5, i can say this cottage is great. It is very quaint but very warm and we loved the wood burner. There was cake left for us which was delicious. The location was excellent. The local pub was only steps away and although they didnt allow dogs in, they took our meal order and delivered it to the cottage. Very good service.
Would definately book again.
Anne.
Well equipped cottage.
This is a well equipped and comfortable cottage ideally located for walking and exploring the Dales.
The kitchen has everything you would need to cook a meal and includes a good sized fridge freezer and a dishwasher. The bedrooms are comfortable with plenty of storage space and a lovely view from the back windows. Like all cottages of this vintage with small windows and thick walls it can get a bit chilly in the evening if the weather is not brilliant but the wood burning stove soon sorted that out. You also have radiators but apparently they are not as romantic. Or so I was told.
Do not be put off by the close proximity of the pub if you are worried about noise. Lots of walkers sat at tables in the car park during the day but you can not hear them in the cottage and by 10pm ish the pub is in darkness. We had two meals in the pub and thoroughly enjoyed them. They also sell Theakstons Old Peculiar which makes any pub great in my world.
It takes approximately 40 minutes to Skipton and Malham Tarn etc and 30 minutes the other way to Hawes. If you are a rail enthusiast the Settle to Carlisle line is nearby. Enthusiast or not, If the sight of a steam engine pulling a train across the Ribblehead Viaduct doesn't move you then you are probably dead.
If I had to find a negative it is the noise of the quarry trucks going past but we didn't find it overly intrusive and its only during the day.
We would definitely recommend this cottage and will probably be returning.
What a lovely cottage in great walking countryside. The cottage was very well stocked and the owners left some lovely touches to make it even more homely. It was so cosy, we did not want to come home!
Harber Scar - a delightful cottage in beautiful surroundings, so much to do and see. An ideal base for touring the dales and afar. A walkers paradise and the local people are very friendly. What more could you want.
Beautifully equipped cottage with some welcoming little extras. Location could not be better with walks all around and the pub literally opposite. In fact this was our second stay and my family are already talking about 'when' we go back!
Very clean and a very well equipped kitchen. Granddaughter loved the garden and we had several meals out there.
Totally enjoyed the holiday. The cottage was lovely and comfortable and the owner was both helpful and nice. I have recommended the cottage to friends. It was everything the site claimed it to be.
The location and the cosiness of the cottage was fabulous and the log burning fire and fireplace were just wonderful, especially on some of the very cold evenings. The shower was nice and the hot water was constant. The bedrooms had plenty of storage space and the beds were lovely and comfy. It was lovely and welcoming after a day out walking.
The warm and welcoming cottage, plus the owners extra touches, made it great. The cottage was spotlessly clean, and the garden was lovely.
Homely cottage with great walks from the door step. Not too far to walk to the pub.
Everything was fabulous! We will recommend to all and sundry!
Good, snug, simple accommodation in fantastic location. Local facilities great. Small local shop in walking distance, Booth's in Settle has everything you could want and more. Plenty of walking with Pen-y-Ghent on the doorstep and things to see. Cottage has an open fire which proved great fun. There are 2 pubs in walking distance.
Lovely cosy cottage with welcoming mince pies and dog treats. Very clean and tidy. Great location. Very good value for money.
Good standard and location of the cottage. Great area for walking. The Crown pub 1min away, has great staff, and great food. Local people made us feel welcome.
Wonderful cottage that is the ideal base for walking or touring the area. Cakes and milk a most welcome find. Pub across the road serves good beer and food.
Cottage was very cosy and well equipped - a true home from home. The Crown, just 12 steps from the back door, serves excellent food and is very welcoming.
The cottage was a 'home from home.' The area was beautiful, and there were lots to see and do for our tastes.
Apart from the weather, which was superb all week in March, the cottage was tailor-made for us. It's situation and especially the garden, meant we were in no hurry to rush off to see the sights. Lots of lovely walks - gentle strolls for old dears like us and more demanding ones for the next generation while we babysat. We took advantage of the train line just along the road, visiting Appleby, and shopped in Settle a couple of miles in the other direction. The Wensleydale Creamery is also unmissable. Lunch there highly recommended.
A very relaxing walking holiday.
We love to take our dogs away with us - finding somewhere that's home from home isn't easy but we were lucky! One week in May - perfect weather - the cottage has to be the nicest we have stayed in, so much so the day after we came home we re-booked for November and May next year! Comfortable and clean and the garden was ideal for our dogs. A good pub across the road, what more could you ask for - we could find no negatives at all.
As we have stayed at the property before we knew exactly what we were getting. It's location at the foot of Pen-y-gent is fantastic as its it's closeness to the Crown! Small but perfectly functional accommodation which we hope to use again.
This is a lovely traditional stone cottage, in a superb location. It was homely, well presented, and great for relaxation and as a base for a multitude of outdoor activities. I can thoroughly recommend this cottage and area to everyone who enjoys the outdoors. Ideal for families too.
Really liked the cottage. Great location, close to the pub. Nice garden for dogs.
