Find My Favourite Holiday Cottages in Dolphinholme

Dolphinholme is a charming Lancashire village in a designated conservation area tucked away on the banks of the River Wyre, on the fringes of the spectacular Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  The village is divided into two parts, with the lower portion nestled along the banks of the River Wyre and designated as a historic conservation area.  Despite the occasional presence of dolphin imagery in the village, the name "Dolphinholme" traces its origins back to an ancient Viking settlement, evidence of which can be found in the surrounding area.

During the industrial revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries, Dolphinholme thrived. In 1795, Lower Dolphinholme saw the building of a worsted mill. This enabled the village to become one of the first areas in the UK to enjoy its own gas supply and gas street lighting. At its zenith, the mill employed around a thousand spinners locally and in home-based setups. The yarn produced here reached weaving centres in Bradford and Leeds. The village's storied past is still very much visible today, with the remains of the mill and a meticulously restored original gas lamp on display in a private garden.

Modern Comforts and Amenities:

Recreational options abound, including a bowling green and tennis court for those seeking active leisure. Should you wish to extend your stay, Dolphinholme also offers charming holiday cottages for short breaks or longer sojourns.
