Find My Favourite Holiday Cottages in Muddiford

Muddiford in North Devon is a small rural village strung out along quiet back lanes off the road from Barnstaple to the Victorian seaside resort of Ilfracombe. Nestling in a green and steeply wooded valley, Muddiford contains few modern buildings, comprising instead of a goodly number of picturesque holiday cottages, farmhouses and lovingly converted barns that date back over the centuries. Many of these have been thoroughly refurbished to provide high-quality holiday cottages from where some lovely countryside walks into the verdant North Devon countryside lead straight from the garden gate of many self-catered cottages. To the north, the road out of Muddiford will take you to Ilfracombe and the North Devon Beaches of Woolacombe, Croyde, Putsborough and Combe Martin if you head west. Head east for days out exploring the wilds of Exmoor and its quaint little villages.

Small and sleepy it may be, but Muddiford will keep any visitor entertained. It has an excellent pub, The Muddiford Inn, with a fine restaurant menu and an excellent range of local ales. Its other main attraction is the Broomhill Art Hotel which, apart from having an excellent restaurant, has a fascinatingly quirky sculpture garden laid out in a chuckling stream-lined valley within the grounds. A little closer to Barnstaple is Blakewell Fisheries, a trout farm with excellent trout lakes. Visitors can opt for a spot of serious fly-fishing, while little novices and their parents can opt for one of the small ponds to feed or catch trout using a simple rod and pellet. Take your catch to your holiday cottage to go straight on the BBQ.

Muddiford is a few miles north of the market town of Barnstaple, where all main services and supermarkets can be found. The Tarka Trail, a 40-mile cycle and footpath on an old railway line, can be accessed here. It runs along the estuaries of the Taw and Torridge rivers, offering some stunning scenery, as well as cafes and pubs at convenient intervals. Bicycles of all sorts and sizes can be hired from Barnstaple station.
