Royd Cottage, Ilfracombe

The tastefully decorated cottage is bright and spacious, with a good-sized lounge featuring two leather sofas and a flat-screen TV with Freeview and a DVD player. A separate well-equipped kitchen/diner is fitted with an electric oven and hob, a fridge with a small freezer compartment, a dishwasher, a washing machine and a microwave. A large table comfortably seats up to 4 guests.

Guests will find one double and one twin bedroom on the cottage's first floor. Both bedrooms have character features, including exposed stone walls and wood beams. The family bathroom has recently been renovated and is also located upstairs. It features a bath with a shower overhead, a WC and a washbasin.

To the front of the cottage is the communal courtyard, where tables and chairs are located for alfresco dining. Guests can also wander the grounds, home to two well-stocked fishing lakes and a children's play area. The private fishing lakes are for the use of Lower Aylescott only; they are well-stocked with carp, bream, rudd and tench. Please remember to bring your rods, bait and license.

A vast field is home to a brand new (June 2019) outdoor children's play area featuring a tube slide, climbing wall and rope ladder, and even football goalposts. There is also plenty of space for children to play safely. Gates ensure secured access to the lakes.

In the nearby village of West Down, guests can take advantage of the handy community-owned shop selling essentials or enjoy a meal in the family-friendly pub. Alternatively, Visitors will find a more comprehensive range of shops and restaurants in Ilfracombe or Braunton.

There are various attractions within the local area for those visiting with children, including The Big Sheep, Exmoor Zoo and Watermouth Castle. Other local interests include Arlington Court, RHS Rosemoor and Broomhill Sculpture Gardens.

The South West Coast Path is easily accessed in Woolacombe or Ilfracombe for local walks. Alternatively, walkers and cyclists can enjoy the mainly traffic-free Tarka Trail, which runs for 40 relatively level miles from Braunton to Meeth.

As well as being close to the beaches, Lower Aylescott is less than a 30-minute drive from Exmoor National Park, where visitors can relax in one of the many tea rooms for a traditional cream tea.
