A quiet retreat
A wonderful break away. Beautiful location, roomy, well equipped cottage. Helpful friendly owners who pulled our car out of a snow drift even!
Barnard Castle a 20 mns drive away.
Great location for walkers and for driving to explore the area, both north and south.
Only negative was no internet acccess, but that was a minor gripe.
We were there in winter. Would also be wonderful in the Summer.
Highly recommended.
Great retreat with panoramic scenery
Lovely cottage with all your homely needs cattered for, even for the dog. Fantastic scenery and views from the cottage. Beautifull countryside walks, lots of bird watching and breathtaking drives accross the moors to see the grouse. Best pub is the Fox and Hounds in Cotherstone and best cream tea was in The Laurels at Staindrop...yum yum!
Lovely view
Lovely views from this cottage. Surrounded by green fields and sheep.
Bowes Museum very interesting
an ideal location for my interests.
A delightful view with adequate comforts must have transport as no facilities in walking distance.
loveley
it was one of my best holidays ever plentey to do lovley views ideal for my border collie puppy enclosed garden just loved it we will be back
Tranquil pleasant cottage in picturesque surroundings.
Comfortable accommodation in quiet backwater.Plenty of walks in the fells and around the nearby reservoirs, and plenty of attractions in the district.Even the weather[including rain and snow] didn't detract from the pleasant holiday.
A cottage with the most fantastic view.
The cottage was well equipped and comfortable. We moved the dining table in the kitchen to take better advantage of the views over the reservoir and hillside. The lounge was comfortable and the bedroom was fine, except for the small doorway which is fine if you are under 5 feet tall.
Outstanding
Wonderful - well appointed cottage conversion in what has rightly been described as one of the UK's hidden gems, the Durham Dales. a short drive from the thriving market town of Barnard Castle with award winning restaurants, yet secluded and with outstanding views. Cosy bedrooms, comfortable sitting room, well appointed kitchen (the rolling pin and mixing bowl saw some action this week).
Peaceful, relaxing, get away from it all location with stunning views.
This is a lovely cosy cottage adjoined to the owners house with it's own garden and stunning views over Hury reservoir and the dales beyond. If you are looking for peace and quiet and somewhere away from it all, then this is the place to be.
The cottage is well maintained and equipped and each room feels very comfortable. My favourite was the kitchen with the lovely featured arch window overlooking Hury reservoir.
The cottage is warm and homely with freshly laundered, ample supply of towels and comfy beds. One bedroom is located off the kitchen, and the other off the sitting room. Even during a very stormy 36 hours, we felt cosy and warm in the cottage.
There are some walks round the reservoir or along the lanes in the immediate location and is probably even more lovely during the summer months. The nearest place, we found, to shop was Barnard Castle, so go with some provisions. Barnard Castle is a lovely market town and nice to wander around as it has some lovely shops and of course the castle.
There is no internet at the cottage, which is sometimes a good thing, but also extremely scarce mobile phone network coverage, so be prepared to be cut off from the outside world for a while.
This is a dog friendly cottage and the main reason I chose to stay here, especially with the enclosed garden. The sun room entrance porch is great for taking off muddy wellies and for drying off muddy paws before going inside the cottage. However, for two small Cockapoo's the garden was not secure enough as they could fit through the bars on the gate and the wire fencing also has gaps big enough for them to get through, so for us, it was supervised on the lead in the garden. Immediately across from the wire fence is a field of sheep, so something to be mindful of too.
I would definitely recommend this cottage. Certainly a great place to unwind.
Fabulous, relaxing Hideaway
A fantastic cottage on the banks of the Hury reservoir. The cottage is lovely, clean and warm, very comfortable and equipped to a high standard with everything you could possibly want. They have tea bags and coffee with fresh milk in the fridge and a packet of shortbread caramel biscuits for us and doggy treats for the dog. There was tin foil, cling film, washing up liquid, dishwashing tabs, doggy bags, even a towel for the dog, everything you'll need!
The cottage is remote situated 3 miles over the Moors, but has good roads to reach it if you follow the directions given by the owners. The nearest shop is 4 miles away which is a post office, so only open throughout the day and the nearest town Barnard Castle which is 10 miles away, so make sure you take the food you need for the first days.
The scenery is stunning with far reaching views across the reservoir and surrounding Pennines.
The garden is fully enclosed for dogs with a wire fence and chicken wire around the bottom, but if you have small dogs they maybe able to get through a small area of fencing that didn't have chicken wire on at the side of the cottage.
You can walk around the reservoir 3.5 miles, but there isn't a proper path way to get to it, so not good for less able visitors and I found that there isn't anywhere you can walk the dogs for a short toilet break as the cottage is down a short lane and then your onto the road and sheep in the field outside the cottage.
The owners were lovely and nothing would be too much trouble. I would definitely recommend and will look forward to a return visit.
We can't praise the property enough!
The wonderful position of the property and the friendliness of the owners who made you feel at home.
Cottage and setting was great.
A great location with plenty of walking in the area and directly from the cottage.
Beautiful view, lovely setting, good value.
The cottage was lovely, cosy and warm. The sun room was an added bonus and lovely to view the reservoirs on a sunny, cool day. The views were fantastic. In a lovely, quiet location with good parking.
It was very relaxing.
Beautiful location, pretty little cottage with a lovely enclosed garden which was safe for a toddler. Friendly, helpful owners. Cottage well equipped for a baby/toddler with high-chair, cot and child-friendly cups and plates.
The property was excellent. The owner was very helpful and friendly. The views from the cottage were fantastic.
Excellent location for those who like the quiet, tranquil holiday. Ideal for walkers, birders and nature lovers.
Very nice cottage, in a very quiet setting ideal for a very relaxing holiday.
This is a cosy, well-appointed, cottage with SUPERB views of the surrounding countryside. The owner was friendly and helpful, and had gone to great pains to provide useful information about both the house facilities and local attractions, and local maps. The standard of furnishing was very good for a 'Pet-friendly' cottage. The decor was particularly pleasing. We would really struggle to find fault with this cottage.
It was a luxury to have a dishwasher, but I might have preferred a washing machine if we had been staying longer.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Hury Lodge to others.
Even my cats didn't want to leave!
Fantastic cottage location overlooking Hury Lake. The cosy cottage had big windows and a conservatory with fantastic views. We wanted to stay forever and will definitely be staying again but next time for longer.
Wonderful location, beautiful views, quiet away from any noise or traffic. Relaxing atmosphere.
The location was superb, the cottage was very comfortable and dog friendly and the owners were very hospitable and very accommodating. A thoroughly enjoyable holiday!
Lots to do in the area. Visited the Tall Ships 2010 at Hartlepool.
The cottage was of a high standard. The views were excellent. The owners were very helpful and friendly. This was our second visit, and we would come again.
Pet friendly cottage.
Very peaceful area with lovely views. Safe garden for children to play. Good location for walking and sight seeing.
It was a very peaceful location with beautiful views. This is the only cottage I have been to that I would most definitely return to. There are abundant walks and so many places of interest close by. We were made to feel very welcome, and it was nice to be able to go for some decent long walks from the doorstep with my dog. The list is endless!
The view from the cottage kitchen-diner was wonderful and the surrounding countryside beautiful. The cottage was comfortable. There were quite a few interesting things to do in the area.
The view, the rural outlook and the wildlife that was present.
Cottage and enclosed garden excellent for young children and dogs. Loved views and nearby walks. Will go back again.
The beautiful location, the peace and tranquillity.
A wonderful view and very friendly owners.
The property was cozy and warm and had beautiful views of the reservoir. It was great for our 2 dogs to go into the garden that was fully secured. There was plenty of information about the surrounding areas and local pubs and restaurants where we visited and had lovely food. All in all, we had a great few days.
This cottage was lovely and warm, spacious, well equipped and quiet.
The peace and wonderful scenery from the property. Lovely garden and the local sheep were very friendly! Perfect.
The outstanding feature of this holiday was the incredible views, both locally and also from the cottage itself.
It was the best cottage I ever stayed in, for us it was super, 5 star. You need to take just clothes, as this cottage is very well equipped. Beautiful place. Wonderful surroundings, and a homely, peaceful and stunning cottage.
Comfortable cottage, beautiful location and excellent walking area. Completely enclosed dog friendly garden a big plus for us.
Beautiful location overlooking reservoir with many walks in area. Had a dog friendly, enclosed sunny garden and friendly owners in adjoining property.
The peace and quiet plus the feeling of almost having a home from home!! The surrounding walks were also amazing!!
The cottage was ideal for walking straight from the front door with the dogs plus there were numerous walks which were only a short drive from the cottage.
The property provided comfort and seclusion even though a thriving market town was only a short drive away.
Our second visit and it was just as we had remembered it. The owners were very friendly and always happy to chat. Had stunning views which the cottage makes the best of with the big picture window in the kitchen and the little porch/sun lounge. Care had also been taken with the garden. We hope to visit again. We all, including the dog, enjoyed it.
We loved the cottage and the location. Stunning views and walks and plenty to do with young children. The owners were very friendly and the cottage was set up with everything we needed.
A quiet and peaceful few days. Easy to reach Barnard Castle and Middleton. A beautiful part of the world and a comfortable well equipped cottage.
We liked the peace, solitude and beautiful views from Hury Lodge. We would definitely go again.
This is an excellent cottage, that is very well equipped, in beautiful area.
