Suffolk: A Countryside County Bursting with Cultural Experiences

Culture abounds in this county, bounded by cliffs and beaches, and a great way to see it all is to rent a Suffolk holiday cottage. It is the home of the world-famous Aldeburgh Festival at Snape Maltings Concert Hall, the Aldeburgh Literary Spring Festival, and the beautifully preserved Theatre Royal in Bury St. Edmunds. Bury grew up around St.Edmund's shrine, the East Anglian king martyred by the Danes in the 9th century (in case you were wondering). Today it is a lovely old market town, still a bustle with many local shops and cafes and a good base for a self-catering holiday exploring Suffolk's idyllic countryside and country houses.

In Suffolk, every kind of family day out is catered for. The county has so many experiences to give you a totally different day out during the season, and, if you're at the races, maybe a lucky one too. Examples include the Suffolk Agricultural Show, Lowestoft Airshow on the seafront, the easy-going Latitude Rock Festival on Henham Estate near Lowestoft, open-air concerts in Thetford Forest and Newmarket, home of the Jockey Club on its wide High Street. Suffolk also produced two of the world's famous artists. You can still compare the actual settings of some of Thomas Gainsborough's most famous paintings, still to be seen around his home town of Sudbury and the art gallery in his house. And similarly, John Constable's famous views of Flatford and Dedham are still recognizable. Dedham is also the birthplace of Sir Alfred Munnings, whose famous Victorian animal paintings can be seen there.
