The Accommodation
1) The living room with pull-out sofa bed, dining table and chairs. Kitchen area with fridge, sink, oven, hobs and worktops.
2) The bedroom with double bed and en suite bathroom with shower, toilet and wash basin.
3) Star gazing platform/mezzanine with comfy cushions – accessed by a fixed ladder.
The cottage has central heating. There is also an electric ‘wood burner’ in the living room. There is a television and Wi-Fi.
Sorry no dogs. Children are welcome. Parents of younger children please be aware of the natural hazards – such as the pond and the stream.
No smoking in the cottage.
Outside
Outside you’ll find ample parking, a large lawn area, and a paved patio with table and chairs for al fresco dining. A barbecue is provided.
Beyond the lawn is a beautiful natural pond area abounding in wildlife and overhung by native Alder trees. To the rear of the cottage – literally on the bank of the stream- is the outside bathing area with a genuine Victorian nursery bath (taps in the middle- so two people can use it). Hot water is provided by a wood- fired boiler. Allow a couple of hours to get enough water up to temperature. Firewood is provided for two sessions.
The kingfisher’s nest is a carefully converted barn – a detached private cottage on a smallholding in a stunning location on the banks of Cowesby Beck. It is within walking distance of the pubs in both Knayton (the Dog and Gun in Knayton serves food) and Borrowby. For shopping there’s Thirsk and Northallerton – both a few miles away.
Wildlife
Lovers of nature (and in particular birds) will appreciate the variety of species on offer! Buzzards are regularly seen above, and herons are attracted by the aquatic life in the waterways. Woodpeckers, nuthatches, bullfinches and goldfinches are all in residence, and many more migrating species visit during the summer. Kingfishers are in evidence in spring, checking out nesting sites and food supplies. There is a kingfishers nest site opposite the kitchen window, last used a few years ago – we live in hope!
Location
The property is located just outside the village of Knayton.
Activities
Walking /rambling
The Hambleton hills – which are the start of the North Yorkshire Moors – are a couple of miles away and the local lanes have very little traffic.
Cycling
The nearby forests of Over Silton and Boltby offer a matrix of paths and tracks for mountain biking whilst the ancient ‘drover’s road’ at the top of the bank will take you for miles off-road either south to Sutton Bank, or north towards Osmotherly.
Flying
Yorkshire Gliding Club is nearby, offering flights and one day courses.
York is about 23 miles south and the coast at Saltburn is about 28 miles northeast.
