Back in 1201, Helston was a port, and over centuries, has evolved into a fascinating mix of monuments and architecture. An example would be the Blue Anchor pub, where monks would rest after their long travels – before it became a tavern, of course. Now, the Blue Anchor is perhaps the country’s oldest private brewery and the ideal place to taste the local tipple. To find out more about Helston’s enthralling past, there’s always the Helston Folk Museum, dating back to 1837.

Of course, Helston is close to other fantastic towns, such as the beautiful Porthleven, making it an ideal place for a rented holiday cottage. Porthleven is home to Coronation Park and Boating Lake, perfect for a relaxing afternoon on the water. Pack a picnic and wander through Penrose Estate’s surrounding natural life, or rent a surfboard and hit the coast. When you’re done for the day, return to your charming Helston cottage, and soon enough, you’ll know why author Daniel Defoe sang the praises of this marvellous town even back in 1725.
